Vezakeini as a lullaby

“Vezakeini” is a Shabbat song traditionally sung by women after lighting Shabbat candles in which we ask G-d that we may merit to raise who are wise, righteous and G-d-fearing children. Because of its meaning, it has become a tradition in my family to sing it as a lullaby to our children to put them to sleep at bedtime. The attached audio file is a recording from the Nativ College Leadership Program in Israel’s Tisch CD (obtained from the Zemirot Database).

Why is this important to you/your community? It is an innovative use of a traditional song, giving it new meaning by recontextualising the moment when it is sung. It also imbues children with early memories of traditional Hebrew songs.
