Tikkun Leil Shavuot is the custom of collective study during the first night of Shavuot, the festival commemorating the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. Rooted in rabbinic tradition and widely developed from the early modern period, the practice expresses spiritual preparation and communal dedication to learning.
Participants gather in synagogues, study halls or private homes to read and discuss biblical passages and rabbinic texts, sometimes following a structured programme and often concluding with morning prayers. Formats range from paired learning and group discussions to short lectures adapted to different levels of knowledge.
The tradition reinforces study as a core element of Jewish cultural and religious life, supports intergenerational transmission, and strengthens community bonds through shared nighttime practice. In contemporary settings it has adapted to include public cultural programming and inclusive study initiatives, while remaining grounded in community recognition and ongoing transmission. Today, Tikkun Leil Shavuot is practiced widely across Europe and in Jewish communities worldwide.

Why is this important to you/your community?Tikkun Leil Shavuot is important because it affirms study as a central pillar of Jewish cultural and religious life. By gathering communities to learn throughout the night, it strengthens collective identity, encourages intergenerational transmission of knowledge, and reinforces the relationship between text, memory and lived practice. Its adaptability across historical periods and cultural contexts demonstrates the resilience and continuity of Jewish intangible heritage
